Writer's Block: One Hit Wonder Day

Sep. 25th, 2008 | 12:49 pm

Today's National One Hit Wonder Day. Whole albums or entire ouvres can be quite impressive, but more often than not, individual songs have the largest impact on us. Which one hit wonders have played a major role in your life?

I can think of one off the top of my head. "Never gonna give you up" by Rick Astley. I think that one's self explanitory.

THE CHEESE. From the "Wacky Deli" episode of Rocko's Modern Life.
Because he is the best character on the show.

Seen here:

If Wacky Deli was a real show, I would totally watch it all the time.

After I finished this my dad asked me what I was doing and I told him about this question and he said he'd choose Shogo from Battle Royale, which is great.

Bendy straws. I mean damn, I can sit an inch away from my drink AND STILL BE DRINKING IT. AMAZING! I don't have to tilt my head at a strange angle to quench my thirst, I can simply move my head in a forward motion and recieve the drink I well deserve. Thank you, bendy straw inventor, you are the child with a shovel and pail, building the grand sandcastle of my life grain by grain.

In other news, I will be putting a bunch of pictures of Baltimore and explanations/stories up sometime soon.

Freerice

Aug. 6th, 2008 | 01:36 am

So there's this thing called freerice. http://www.freerice.com/index.php

It could be a load of bull, or it could be totally real, but either way it's worth checking out.
I was bored and I saw it on facebook.
And it makes me feel better about myself that my free time can be spent doing something productive, other than looking at videos of people riding really loud scooters, or packing explosives into fruit.

And it helps improve vocabulary.
My vocab score is 14 (hahaha) but my best is 25. Which is not so good but I can't get past the damned thing.

Edit: So I've been playing this for an hour and a half because there isn't much else to do at 1:30 in the morning, and now I have 11,000 grains of rice and a vocab level of 30. I keep trying to go to bed, but I'm like I KNOW WHAT THAT WORD MEANS, AND THE NEXT ONE, AND THE NEXT ONE...

Writer's Block: In the Event of a Zombie Emergency

Are you prepared for a zombie outbreak, or are you just going to wing it?

View 500 Answers

Well I have seen alot of zombie movies (Resident Evil, Dawn of the Dead, Shaun of the Dead, etc), and I do own Dead Rising, so I guess I could say I'm sort of prepared. I know to aim for the head, and I could probably pull off the horrified scream if I were to have my guts torn out. I'm not sure where I could find a shotgun or any other sort of effective weapon on such short notice, so I would have to wing it for weapons. Maybe I could fashion a makeshift scythe with a walking stick, duct tape, and a kitchen knife, but that would probably be the best I could do. And I have a group of friends who could help me out in short notice, if they weren't already zombies. So yeah, I'd say maybe I'm about half prepared. I'd probably wing it anyways. In the words of the great Leeroy Jenkins, "LEEEEEROYYYYY... JENKINSSSSSSSSSSSS!"

Things that I like.

music: Searching - Joe Satriani

I'd like to get this out of the way first: Mudkipz. Technically I don't like them, but I do liek them.

Anyways, Nicole did one of these. I am stealing it.

Crystal! The feeling of new guitar strings. The smell of maple syrup. The color of the trees in autumn. Tweaking a song slightly just to give it the perfect sound. Seeing the sun rise and then going to bed. Waking up in the afternoon. Spending all day and night reading a great book. Ketchup. Macaroni and cheese. Pizza. Jonathan Coulton. Kaki King. Julia Nunes. Iron and Wine. Eric Mongrain. When things aren't always what they seem to be. Keeping in touch. Running into an old friend. Little kids. Old people. Peaceful silence. Deafening noise. Friends. Family. Music in general. Guitar legends. Eric Clapton. Joe Pass. BB King. Myself (I wish). Stevie Ray Vaughan. Robert Plant. Jimi Hendrix. Joe Satriani. The Beatles. The Who. Passing Rock Band vocals on expert for the first time. Singing backup vocals for Smile at the Semi, or trying to at least. Jumping around like a nut and having people look at me funny. Playing Sweet Home Alabama in my dad's band, even though I only knew the beginning of it. When three chords of a song can go on and on forever, even after the song is supposed to stop. When a friend stops by and you don't expect it. AIR CONDITIONING. Basketball. Baseball. The superbowl. My dog. The final chord of any song in existence. People who know all of the words to a specific movie. Chocolate. Three Musketeers bars. Misspelling words and retyping them multiple times. Mint chocolate chip ice cream. Reeses pieces. Apple Strudel. English, creative writing, and music class. Being an electrician's apprentice. Teaching guitar. The respect that some people give you after you tell them that you are a guitar teacher. Going on cruises. Jamaica. Mexico. Japan. The Panama Canal. Acoustic guitars. Twelve string guitars. Electrics. Basses. The fact that I own two basses and can't play them that well. Ukeleles. Mandolins. Banjos. Sitar. Woodstock stories from old people who may or may not have been there. Amateur directors and musicians who are better than professionals. Watching an amateur musician or director become more and more well known. When people respect others' opinions. Songs about zombies. How songs in commercials are more catchy than mainstream songs. People who have the guts to get up and perform in front of a group of people, whether they're good, or not so great. Coffee shops. Parks. Subways. The bullet train. How it takes so long to tweak one little chord of a song, but it's so worth it in the end. Youtube and Facebook. Matilda (my car). Spelling "a lot" wrong.

It's nowhere near finished though. I wrote most of it in a Chello's.

P.S. I would like to apologize to Math. I purposely left it out, and it's never coming back.

What are some gripping opening lines from films or books, and why do you think they work so well?

View 500 Answers

I was going to leave, then this caught my eye.

The book that I started reading about a year ago and I never finished and just discovered the other day has a very obvious opening line that I really like.

The title of the book is "Have Space Suit - Will Travel," and it was written by Robert Heinlein.

"You see, I had this space suit"

Well, thank you captain obvious, I couldn't really read the title that well, so I'm glad you were able to tell me again. Even though it seems like a stupid opening line, it pulled me in. Who has a space suit, and why would they need it? Are they an astronaut, because that seems like the only person who would have a reason to own a space suit, and if it is an astronaut, why would they have to tell a story about it? Obviously the book is written to tell a story about this space suit, or its owner. Well anyways, I had a hundred and six questions.

But after that one sentence, all my questions started to get answered a little more.

"How it happened was this way: 'Dad,' I said, 'I want to go to the Moon.'
'Certainly,' he answered and looked back at his book. It was Jerome K. Jerome's Three Men in a Boat, which he must know by heart.'"

I felt like those few lines answered a bunch of my questions.
First, "Dad." Okay, it was a kid. He couldn't be an astronaut, unless he was a genius. And for a genius, his dad doesn't really take him too seriously. So definitely not an astronaut. He wants the space suit so he can go to the moon. This story makes some sense now, but I still have more questions, so I read on.

I didn't lose this book because of what I thought of it, by the way, I just put it down and the rest of my family stole it from me to read, and they never told me where they put it when they were done. It's actually a really good book.

It is 4:30 AM right now.

Jun. 30th, 2008 | 04:28 am

mood: peaceful peaceful
music: Iron and Wine - Such Great Heights

I am so tired that everything is beginning to spin, so I will make this short.

I just stayed up to watch "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind," and it was such an amazing movie. Sort of confusing, but in all, I loved it. It really made me take a look at my life and appreciate all of the memories, whether they were good or bad. You know, I have screwed up a few times, but I can't go back and change them. Right now, I'm just glad to be myself.

I have also been working on a long-ish type short story. I really don't know how it's going to go yet. I think it's going to start with a kid and some friends who decide to get together and play some songs for enjoyment, and one day someone recognizes them and they go big. I want to write a story about all that, because maybe there are a ton of them out there, but I haven't read them yet, and I want to write a story of my own. Sure, I have stories from Creative Writing, but I want to write one with no limitations or specific things that have to be added. If not writing for a storyline, I want to write to establish my own style, what details I pay attention to, among other things. Plus, I talk about music all the time, how is writing about it going to be any different, except for the fact that I am not speaking to anyone specifically?

Iron and Wine's cover of Such Great Heights is amazing. I didn't really listen to much of it earlier because I was checking out all of the other covers of the song, and the original version, but I have just listened to it four or five times in a row, and it's so beautiful.

I yelled at Matt Smith pretty bad today, he might kick me out of the band, or at least out of the next couple of practices. I was pissed at the time, but now, I realize it was pretty stupid. He told me a bunch of times he was sorry, and he wouldn't do it again. I've done stupid things before and not thought about what I was doing to the other person. What he did wasn't much different, it was just more serious. But anyways, yelling about it all isn't going to stop what had already happened, and I should have realized that. I should have let him just leave it at "Sorry, it'll never happen again." But hey, when I'm mad, I need to cool down before I figure these things out.

I can't be a peaceful person all the time, but I can really wish I was.
Anyways, I hope this made sense even though I jumped from one thing to the other. It's almost 4:45 in the morning and I'm hanging out with Steve tomorrow afternoon, don't mind me.

What makes a hero?

A hero is made up of Flesh, blood, and organs. With the exception of Batman, they also all have various superpowers.

Optional: Secret Identity, Cape, Utility belt, Spandex.

Guild 12 string guitar (custom made for my uncle in Westerly) - $500
Repairs (for bent neck, lifted bridge, high action) - $165
New strings - $15

Having a 12 string that plays like a million bucks - Priceless.

Except I have to wait two weeks, darn.
Cantwaitcantwaitcantwait.

Only problem with the price of fixing the guitar is that I don't have any money to pay for the next instrument anymore, but oh well.

What should cheese go on, and what should cheese NOT go on?

View 501 Answers

I saw this and couldn't resist answering.

Cheese should go on: Cheeseburgers, Cheese Pizza, Cheese ravioli, Cheez-its, Cheese curls, Macaroni and cheese, Broccoli and cheese.

Cheese should not go on: A man/woman/child wearing stilts, The state of Michigan, An untuned clarinet, The kid four rows over from me in English class, The tusks of an elephant, Unstable chemicals, People who are allergic to specific cleaners and/or fabrics, A large tire (most likely from a tractor or big vehicle of some sort), Anything with more than seven or eight moving parts, Kermit the frog, Any Dave Matthews Band CD, Express mail (UPS is fine, however), Anything beginning with the letter "X", And women who are nursing/pregnant/may become pregnant.

I could go on for days but I figured I'd stop now before it stopped being funny.

Because I found this on it:

"I HAVE A 1995 MO' VAN THAT GOT TRANSFORMED INTO THIS CATBUS. I BROUGHT IT TO A SHOPS AND I WAS LIKE HEY, CAN YOU TURN THIS INTO A CATBUS? SO THEY DID. THEN THAT DAY I DROVE IT HOME. THE CAT BUS ONLY HAS 50K, WHICH ARE ALL HIGHWAY MILES AS I DROVE IT TO WORK 2 DAYS A WEEK AND THAT WAS IT. IT'S IN REALLY GOOD SHAPE AND ALL THE FUR IS STILL ALL THERE. THE STEERING WHEEL HAS A CAT ON IT. IM ONLY ASKING 2900 FOR THE CATBUS BECAUSE ITS REALLY FURRY AND SOMETIMES PEOPLE GET SICK ON IT."

http://www.craigslist.org/about/best/alb/621862265.jpg (The picture of the Catbus)

--------------------------------

If I lived any closer to Albany, I'd go meet the guy and shake his hand. That is the most hilarious and random thing I have ever seen in my life. I wouldn't buy the catbus though, because I don't have enough money and sometimes people get sick on it.

Guitar collection.

Jun. 7th, 2008 | 12:05 am
location: Home
mood: artistic
music: Let it Die - Foo Fighters

So alot of people have referred to my guitars as a collection. And then that started to get me used to the idea.

Now I think I'm going to start an actual collection. Hey, you only live once, right? I might as well start collecting and playing a bunch of instruments and have myself a good time.

So after I get my second twelve string, I'm considering a Jenny Concert uke (http://www.jumpingflea.com/images/bu7c.jpg). Because it's not hard to go from guitar to uke, it's mostly chords and the same basic concepts, just a little different to get used to.

My dad was trying to convince me into buying a 1930 National 0 Resonator Nickel Plated Dobro vintage guitar(http://www.pinrepair.com/vgi/national/35_style0-14fret_1.jpg). I'd love to, but it's way out of my price range. But that is indeed one fine looking guitar. Maybe eventually, or in my dreams.

I am not much of a banjo expert, and there are a bunch of different styles of banjo (4 string, 6 string, bluegrass, etc), but I did find a beginner banjo for $150, which isn't bad at all (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/document?cpd=0OEY&doc_id=99371&base_pid=517410&index=0).

And I found a nice acoustic/electric epiphone mandolin for $170 (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/document?cpd=0OEY&doc_id=99371&base_pid=518699&index=0)

I checked out the sitars, and man are they complicated looking. And expensive too. Maybe I'll wait a while before I try to get into sitars.

Anyways, onto the heart attack of the day (for me at least). http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2a/Warr-Guitar-Raptor.jpg

That's all for now, folks! Maybe I'll post the guitars I actually have next time. But for now, just a few ideas towards my collection (which will end up being a stringed instruments collection, not just guitars.

The world is amazing.

music: Ballad of the Beaconsfield Miners - Foo Fighters feat. Kaki King

Dave Grohl wrote this acoustic instrumental piece for 2 miners in the Beaconsfield gold mine collapse in Tasmania, Australia, in 2006. A few days after the collapse, while the rescue was still being planned, one of the miners, Brant Webb, requested that an iPod be sent down to them, filled with Foo Fighters songs. Dave Grohl heard about this story, and wrote a note to them stating, "Though I'm halfway around the world right now, my heart is with you both, and I want you to know that when you come home, there's 2 tickets to any Foos show, anywhere, and 2 cold beers waiting for yous. Deal?" The men were safely rescued, and Dave Grohl later met up with Webb during the band's 3-night acoustic tour at the Sydney Opera House in October 2006. Grohl played this piece for the meeting with the miner, and assured him it would be on the next Foo Fighters album.

Grohl was moved to tears when told his tunes were used to lift the miners' spirits a week before they were rescued after 14 days over half a mile underground. Grohl recalled in the Daily Mail November 23, 2007, "It was a massive moment in my life. People have told me that our songs have helped them through a divorce or bereavement, but there was something special about two guys just trying to survive. I wrote that track as a tribute and promised Brant that I'd put it on the album."

--------------

Wow.
Sometimes, the world is such a great place.
I'm starting to think that Dave Grohl mad the piece instrumental because he was at a loss for words.
I would be too.

I FOUND A MIC WHILE I WAS CLEANING MY ROOM!

Yeah so now I don't think I need to buy one.
It plugs into a guitar jack too so I can just plug it into my lightsnake (lets you plug a guitar chord right into usb) and record that way

I also found Waldo and Narnia while cleaning my room. Who knew?
